Ukraine has been granted European Union candidate status, after applying in the days following the Russian invasion.
The decision was announced earlier this evening, prompting the Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky to welcome the decision.
But candidate status is just the first step towards EU membership, and it can take many years to join.
