Iron Outside, Iron Inside

In Ukraine there’s a saying about tank crews — “Iron outside, iron inside.” That perfectly describes the tankers from the 65th Mechanized Brigade. And these crusty old-timers always tell near-death stories like it was nothing: “… We hit a mine and the wheel blew 200 meters away. We lost a track and half the armor… So, we put the track back on, climbed back into the burning tank, and hit ’em again…”

(2:01) “I couldn’t open the driver’s hatch from the outside, and had to climb in through the turret.” — When firing from a closed position (IDF), it’s a standard safety procedure for non-essential crew to be outside the tank, in the safety of a dugout. In fact, in most cases, only the gunner is needed to fire a tank in IDF mode.

(3:02) *YPR-765* — a Dutch variant of the M113 widely used by infantry assault units in Ukraine. As the name is a mouthful, Ukrainians call it “yuu-pik.” One of the most famous users of the YPR is the 3rd Separate Assault Brigade (https://youtu.be/NOa49gGuOWQ)
