Speaking to Aasmah Mir and Stig Abell, NATO former deputy assistant secretary general Jamie Shea said he thought the only option to end the war in Ukraine would be a negotiated settlement between the country and Russia.
He said: “The only real option is a negotiated settlement.
“But I dont think were there yet, because of course, the Ukrainians wont want to settle while they are still putting up a stout resistance.”
Commenting on reports that Ukrainians were taken away from their country and sent to Russia, he said: “Its incredibly sinister, because of course, its tantamount to kidnapping or forcing people to go where they dont want to go, perhaps even to take on Russian nationality simply because theyre Russian speakers.”
He added: “Its all more grist to the mill for war crimes investigations, which are undoubtedly going to continue and the possible setting up of a war crimes tribunal, as Gordon Brown and John Major suggested over the weekend.”
