US vetoes UN call for immediate humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza

The US, alone among the permanent members of the UN, voted against a draft security council resolution calling for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire between Israel and Hamas militants in the Gaza Strip. The UK abstained.

The move comes after the UN secretary general, António Guterres, made a rare move on Wednesday to formally warn the 15-member council of a global threat from the conflict.
