USS John C. Stennis (CVN 74) Rudder Removal

Time-lapse video of shipbuilders removing the starboard rudder from USS John C. Stennis (CVN 74). The process involves removing the 19-ton rudder stock, which extends through several levels of the aircraft carrier and holds the rudder in place. Each of the ship’s two rudders weigh 48-tons each and are responsible for the steering the ship. Once removed, structural and mechanical repairs will take place as CVN 74 undergoes its mid-life refueling and complex overhaul at Newport News Shipbuilding.
