Dawn assault — Through the eyes of a soldier (3rd Assault Brigade)

The full footage of the 1st Company, 1st Mechanized Battalion, 3rd Separate Assault Brigade, attacking enemy positions in a shelterbelt at dawn.

The operation starts way before sunrise. The Ukrainian assault troopers, equipped with night vision scopes, hand-held grenade launchers, and Non Stop caffeine drinks, stumble through the nightmarish terrain of a bombed-out shelterbelt in the dark, advancing toward the enemy positions, and launching the shock attack up close.

The Russians, caught by surprise, trigger their defense claymores too early, and the Ukrainian shock troops are able to make their way to grenade-throwing distance. With the first rays of light, the Russian positions are overrun.

But the light also means the Russians can launch reconnaissance drones and start bombarding the shelterbelt with mortars…

*Translator’s notes:*

The protagonist’s name is Oleksandr Denysyuk, or simply Sanya, call sign “Zamok” (Lock). Other soldiers refer to him by both names. “Zamok” and his assault partner “Molfar” (Witchdoctor) are advancing on the left flank of the shelterbelt, heading East.

A shelterbelt = windbreak = forestation line — a row of trees and shrubs, 30-60 m wide, planted to provide protection from the wind and prevent soil erosion.

(0:10) “Rambo-tech’s on.” — Presumably, the protagonist switched on the NVD (night vision device) on his assault rifle, which he refers to as “Rambo-tech”.

(0:33) “Firing Fort!” — Fort-600, Ukrainian license-built copy of the B&T GL-06 hand-held grenade launcher — assault trooper’s best friend. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fort-600

(2:24) “Thunder!” — for some reason this particular unit uses the code-word “Thunder” instead of the usual “Friendly (grenade)!” or “Frag out!”

(6:51) “The magic of Non Stop” — A Ukrainian atomic-energy drink overloaded with stimulants: vitamins, taurine, caffeine and sugar. Manufactured in Chernobyl. There’s a not-for-civilian-sale *Non Stop Military Edition,* rumored to imbue one with mystical powers, like seeing things no one else can see and doing things no one else can do… (Kids, don’t try this at home.)
