“Spetsnaz my ass, this is Squall!”

A mere 12-man strong “Squall” assault team from the 141st Brigade liberated the village of Sichneve on the border between the Dnipropetrovsk and Donetsk regions with striking results: 50 Russian invaders were killed, 8 were taken prisoner, and another 30 ran for their lives.

The surprising outcome of this operation, where 12 beat the living daylights out of more than 80, can be explained either by the fact that the Ukrainian attack was meticulously well-planned,

…or that the two different Russian units in the village failed to communicate with each other and lost control of the situation,

…or by what a “Squall” unit actually is.

In Ukraine, “Шквал (Squall)” is the official name for units made up of ex-cons who sign a contract with the Armed Forces to have their sentences annulled. (Naturally, there are limits on who qualifies.)

Typically, such formations are designated as the “Squall”. However, in some brigades, they choose different names. For example, in the 93rd Brigade they call themselves “Alcatraz,” and in the 3rd Assault Brigade, the ex-con volunteers are transparently integrated into rifle battalions without any special designation.

*Notes:*

(2:52) ” Typically, it’s _rexes_ from the 3rd Assault Brigade, Azov, or 225th who announce themselves when they attack.”

“Rex” is a stereotypical name for a particularly ill-tempered guard dog. As such, it has become a sobriquet for the actual assault infantry, distinguishing them from other brigade personnel; much like the designation “operator” does it in Special forces.
