There are no Ukrainian Nazis | Andrey Kurkov

'There are no Ukrainian Nazis' | Andrey KurkovAndrey Kurkov is one of the most famous novelists in Ukraine. His book Death and the Penguin is well-known around the world. Kurkov has been a fierce critic of Putin and has received information that he is ‘wanted’ by the Russians.

He told Hugo Rifkind that he will remain in Ukraine, despite being over the age to participate in the war effort.

He also explained why government by oligarchy did not work in Ukraine and said that Putins rhetoric on Ukrainian Nazis to justify the war was misleading.

He said: “Putin is coming to defend Russian speakers and Russians from Ukrainian Nazis.

“I mean, there are no Ukrainian Nazis.

“There are nationalistic political parties which are not even represented in the parliament because nobody votes for them.”
