Chair of the defence select committee Tobias Ellwood told Times Radio that the government needs to invest “up to 3%” of GDP in defence now as “over the next decade, our world is going to become more dangerous”.
The government must “wake up” and spend more on defending the country, a senior Conservative MP has warned after it emerged that the defence secretary fears military spending faces a real-terms cut.
Tobias Ellwood spoke out after Ben Wallace voiced his financial concerns to Rishi Sunak, the chancellor.
Wallace told Sunak earlier this year that inflation and the expense of sending arms to Ukraine meant that Britain risked falling short of its Nato spending commitments by 2025, according to a leaked letter. Sunak did not treat Wallace’s letter as a formal request for additional defence spending.
