“There are still countries in the world who have these Leopard 1 tanks. So theres always a possibility either to sell spare parts or to sell additional tanks,” says the Belgian CEO of two defence companies, Freddy Versluys.

However, the Belgian Defence Minister, Ludivine Dedonder, says the government has explored buying back his tanks to send to Ukraine, but his prices are ‘unreasonable.’

The spat highlights similar issues faced by Western governments as arms they discarded as obsolete are now in the hands of private companies.
