On Times Radio Breakfast, former Pentagon deputy assistant secretary of defence Jim Townsend said: “Were going to see a lot of tragedy and I think whether its going to be anger or just heartbreak, its very frustrating to sit here and to watch this and to feel that theres that you cant do anything.”
He added that NATO and the United States should have done more to help Ukraine several years ago. He said: “We should have done more a couple of years ago. I think were trying to make up for lost time now.
“Were moving as fast as we can, although not all countries are moving as fast as they should.
“I think theres a lot of disappointment with Germany for instance.”
He added: “Its a great frustration. The speech he [Olaf Scholz, Germanys chancellor] gave a few weeks ago was electrifying.
“I mean, it was quite a historic moment to see such a change and I think there was doubt even the day after that speech that Germany would really follow through on this and I think we still got to give them time to untangle a quite a complex culture and history for Germany to deal with this new era.
